Another Thought about Canada's Moment of Truth: Canadians, What Do You Think?

In his address to the nation yesterday announcing his decision to invoke what are tantamount to wartime emergency powers, Justine Trudeau rattled off a list of entities and persons that he consulted before taking this decision: Cabinet, caucus, premiers from all provinces and territories, and opposition leaders.

As an outsider to Canadian politics, and no expert, I'm interested to know what my Canadian readers think about this.  What do you think these various parties told Justine to do?  Do you think most of them warned him not to do this?  The premier of Quebec, at any rate, has come out and said he disagrees with it.  Do you think any of them encouraged him to invoke emergency powers?  If so, was it in the (well-founded) hope that he will thereby bring about his own downfall?  Is his own party getting sick of him?  Who is waiting in the wings to replace him?

Let me know what you think.

  1. I think the NDP (New Democatic Party) will probably back JT- they are led by a Sikh who has his own agenda for Canada and it isn't a good one- but I hope and pray that all the Conservatives, PQ, PPC and a good smattering of his own Liberals will shut him down. This whole thing could have been solved by dialogue, but you can't even get him to answer a straight question, let alone enter into dialogue when he wouldn't have a script laid out for him by his puppet masters.
His popularity has dropped considerably but it is very difficult to legally oust a Prime Minister. A vote of Non Confidence or a recourse to proving dirty financial dealings (which is in progress) are the only two ways I know of.
Sadly there is no good leader at this point who could step up and fill the void.

  2. Thank you Shirley! What do you think about the Queen or the Governor General exercising reserve powers in the event Parliament doesn't put the kibosh on this? I understand that's a rare thing and the nuclear option, but in the present circumstances...?

  3. I don't know that they will step in. I guess we will soon see. The protesters are doing a legal protest, and that has been acknowledged in court by a judge- as long as it remains peaceful. So we pray that it will be struck down. The whole world is watching and pretty much scorning Trudope for pulling this.

    1. Speaking as part of the world that's watching, I find the guy to be a huge embarrassment. Trudope indeed!

  4. As a Canadian, I am embarrassed that one of the leaders of the convoy Tamara Lich,is repeatedly being denied bail. Her crime? Conspiricy to commit mischief! That's it. In Canada, we let murders out the next day on bail, but not for mischief.

    1. Peter, I see that she is now out of custody but still facing charges. Given the government's retreat on emergency powers, I wouldn't be surprised if it just makes the charges go away one day.

What is really ominous is the freezing of bank accounts. Look how a person can be destroyed with just a few keystrokes. And notice how the government does an end-run around the constitution by getting private entities to exercise what amounts to coercive police powers for it, with none of the accountability.
