If I remember right (and I haven't got a copy handy to check), Dante's Inferno describes the edifices of Hell as being in ruins -- on account of today's Event.
So the Battle is won. The rest is mop-up operations, no matter how hairy things get, or how close it looks like Hell is to winning. It's already lost. Period.
