Chesterton on What Ails Us

102 years ago -- long before Vatican II and all the nonsense that followed in its wake -- G.K. Chesterton had a handle on what lies at the heart of our troubles today. Here is why ordained ministers of the Gospel who put their preaching authority to a use for which it was never intended cannot be corrected. Such men are wont to think of themselves as following in the footsteps of the persecuted Prophets of old, so when they run into opposition, they take that as confirmation of their heroism. And here's a good summation of why.

The word 'heresy' not only means no longer being wrong; it practically means being clear-headed and courageous. The word 'orthodoxy' not only no longer means being right; it practically means being wrong. All this can mean one thing, and one thing only. It means that people care less for whether they are philosophically right.
